Tropical Storm Washi (Philippine name: Sendong) brought record rainfall in Mindanao and the Visayas, estimated at 10-25 mm per hour within its 400 km diameter, triggering flash floods and landslides. Washi affected at least 739 barangay (villages) in eight cities and 13 provinces in seven regions (Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao, CARAGA and Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao). The flash floods hit hardest the cities of Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City. Some 641,098 persons from 92,964 families were affected, 43,663 of whom are in cramped evacuation centres. The number of deaths has risen to 1,010 persons. Some 9,193 households lost their homes; 18,873 had homes partially damaged. Washi also had a disastrous impact on people’s livelihoods. Total cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure is initially estimated at EUR17.5 million. ACCORD responded to the disaster by through a consortium project amongst CARE, ACF, PLAN and Save the Children. ACF is the project contract holder. ACCORD is CARE’s implementing partner. The consortium project objective was to alleviate the immediate suffering of displaced and most vulnerable families affected by Typhoon Washi through integrated and comprehensive humanitarian response. The objective will be realized through the following key results:

  1. Targeted affected families have received food and emergency livelihood assistance
  2. Targeted affected families have replaced lost essential household items
  3. 11.000 affected families and schoolchildren have accessed safe water and improved access to WASH facilities
  4. Affected families and children from targeted areas are provided with psychological support and protection attention with special focus on women and children
