Programmes – Proud of My Purok

Community-Based Integrated Risk Management (2014-2017)

The Proud of My Purok Program was a community-led Integrated Risk Management (IRM) initiative designed to build local capacities, improve natural resource protection, and secure livelihoods at the sub-village (purok) level.

Key Project Details

  • Duration: 2014 – 2017
  • Funding Partner: Netherlands Postcode Lottery
  • Partners: CARE Nederland, Wetlands International, Philippine Red Cross, and ACCORD Inc.
  • Project Sites: Maragusan, Davao de Oro (landslide-prone mountain valleys) and Talacogon, Agusan del Sur (peatlands and river basins).

Key Interventions & Impact

The program mobilized purok-level governance and organization to implement direct actions:

  • Peatland Conservation & Restoration: Protecting crucial carbon-sink peatlands in Talacogon to prevent fires and mitigate flood hazards.
  • Landslide Hazard Mapping & Tree Planting: Implementing community-led reforestation on steep slopes in Maragusan.
  • Purok Solid Waste Management: Establishing localized waste segregation systems to reduce health risks and prevent drainage clogging.
  • Livelihood Diversification: Supporting community savings groups and eco-friendly farming practices to buffer families against crop failures.
