The rains are coming, are you ready?
Barangay Potrero, the largest barangay in Malabon City by area, in partnership with ACCORD and CARE Nederland through the Partners for Resilience Project (PfR) ,will hold a Community Flood Evacuation Drill on June 7, 2014 (Saturday).
The drill will simulate actual evacuation of high-risk households to their identified evacuation sites. Over 2,000 people are expected to participate in this activity, which will test the effectiveness of the Barangay Contingency Plan along with the readiness of the community and the barangay disaster risk reduction and management committee (BDRRMC) during actual emergencies.
Prior to the drill, barangay leaders and selected community residents underwent a series of training workshops on community-based disaster risk management, disaster preparedness, and contingency & risk reduction planning. These trainings raised their awareness on relevant issues and helped them develop specific skills & capacities, such as on how to improve the early warning system. The barangay was also able to draft their own Barangay Contingency Plan, in which they identified worst case scenarios and assessed capacities, vulnerabilities, & hazard impacts.
It is our modest hope that this drill would help spark further action by all stakeholders to build up resilience and reduce communities’ vulnerabilities to natural risks and hazards.
