Community risk assessment is an important first step to building resilient communities. It is a participatory, multi-disciplinary process that looks into the probability of hazards occurring and the severity of its effects in a given community. It seeks to understand how people’s socio-economic and political conditions determine the degree by which hazards can affect them. It is inclusive, giving voice to, and paying attention to specific needs of the most vulnerable groups such as the elderly, persons with disability, children, women and others.

CRAs are an important first step because it provides a solid basis for the development of emergency preparedness and risk reduction measures.  In this session, ACCORD, through its experience in helping vulnerable communities and municipalities, will share the lessons learnt in helping conduct risk assessments.  An important development on how ACCORD and partners conduct risk assessments is the incorporation of climate change and ecosystem management factors into risk assessment tools.

LGUs sharing common ecosystems are starting to realize that risk assessments using a landscape approach help determine measures that have greater impact in mitigating/reducing risks.
