PAGASA and Partners for Resilience spearhead flood warning system setup
The national meteorological agency Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in partnership with the Partners for Resilience alliance will spearhead the setting-up of a flood early warning system which will cover five cities in the Philippine capital. These are the downstream cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela and Quezon City in the upstream.
A Stakeholders Meeting was held on 12 September 2013 to discuss the setting up of an early warning system using a river basin approach as well as current DRR initiatives in the covered cities. An initial action plan towards setting up the EWS was drawn up at the end of the meeting. The event was attended by officials of local government units and national and regional government agencies including the Office of Civil Defense, Department of Interior and Local Government, Metro Manila Development Authority and representatives from the National Power Corporation, National Irrigation Administration and La Mesa Dam Authority operating the Ipo, Bustos and Angat dams that affect waterways in the cities.
PfR alliance partners Netherlands Red Cross, CARE Nederland, Philippine Red Cross, Assistance and Cooperation for Community Resilience and Development (ACCORD) and Corporate Network for Disaster Response (CNDR) organised said event.
